i'm afraid i can't do that, Luke
if some of you know me well enough, especially on my usual haunts online, or on my own LJ, you've might have heard about my continuing PC issues.

basically it goes like this, once upon a time, Turnsky wanted to play a nice round of world of warcraft on his PC, the PC, wanted to lock up, a brief battle ensued, and the PC eventually won its depraved fate, and denied me the use of a better chunk of my games, since now every time i want to run anything remotely 3d orientated, it either hard locks, bsod's or just plain restarts (computer geeks see 77, 7A and F4 errors).

and now, lately, it's started to creep into every day functioning of the system itself, photoshop included, now the recent delays weren't because of that.. there was personal reasons to that lot, mainly a bad case of artist's block.

anywho, i've started to get back into my groove (lo and behold, i've actually got one inked early for once!), and now, (i think my PC hates me) i get these problems with it locking up randomly with the same issues, the thing being, it's just so random, i don't know what happens to cause it, let alone how to stop it.

To that end, i figured it was time to save up some cash for a large wad of hardware..

what a way to kick 2008 off, don't you guys think? =p

Hrm, Probably advice where it wasn't wanted , but I'll just state that it sounds like a Memory or heat issue, both occur 'semi-randomly'

Memory is actually relatively easy to test for,

goto
http://www.memtest86.com/

Download the iso image, burn it to a cd, boot off said cd and leave it for an hour, if there's anything in the list by the time you come back, it's bad Ram.

Heat ... I'm afraid i have no easy tests...

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having troubles. I really, really like your webcomic, so I wish you luck solving all the problems.

I found one reference that listed all three errors and it kind of made sense in light of how you explained you are experiencing them. In this person's case, the culprit was an overheating video card. You might want to see if on yours if your fan has stopped or first invest in an extra case fan to get more airflow for the card.

I had 2 of the three happen to me too. Turns out the problem was the Power supply if yours is 1-3 years old you need to replace it.

yeah, i have a nice trupower 550w on my parts list, i'd already presume that regardless of working condition, i'd have to replace my current 480w sooner or later anyway..

Is your video card an ATI AGP card and have you updated your video drivers anytime recently? ATI has a bug in their current drivers with AGP cards, causing 3D games etc to either not run or crash a lot...only fix is to go back to earlier drivers.

With as much horsepower under the hood as you quote... You'll want to look in to something a little stronger than the Antec 550. Actually, chances are the problems you mention are due to one, or both... a dying PSU (that's what happened in my desktop... till the little shite finally went, and nearly took the entire OS with it -- apparently an ATI Raedeon X1600Pro draws a weeeee bit more power than an aging no-name 420W psu can provide (you may throw rotten tomatoes of DUH!!! now...)
*coughs* annnyway, the ATI was also wang'd by the dying psu, which caused it to rape (think the most nasty disgusting give you nightmares for a month solid) my *new* PSU, and I ended up replacing both. Had I just switched out the powersupply when I *realized* it was toasting... I'd have saved ... well, a lot.
So, for a low cost, right now solution: try dropping a 5-700W power supply in your current box... and for the new one? Plan on 750W just to be safe. Also one that has a very high efficiency rating which will save you money, in the long term.

Cheers! and good luck :)
